Satisfies 3 credits toward Latin American Studies Minor. Old Core: Fulfills non-Western History. New Core: Fulfills 3 credits in Area Knowledge III. Course Description: Historical, political, and economic survey of modern Latin America. Overview of the major countries, such as Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Central America. Their development since 1870 will be analyzed, with emphasis on the period after 1900. The role of the region's economic and political dependence upon Europe and the USA, and of the U.S. as a key regional actor will be closely examined.
