PUB 607 - Magazine Production and Design

Course Description: This course explores magazine design and print and digital production processes as they advance the editorial mission and business requirements of the magazine. Students will learn how to manage production costs, the largest part of the magazine budget, examining problems in the current marketplace, and having discussions with guest speakers from major publishers. Design is a key element in the success of a magazine, and the course will examine the use of design to create a magazine brand, including dialogue with designers. Students will study digital magazines, an increasingly important platform, and get a working understanding of the current models and production techniques. The globalization of magazine publishing presents a huge opportunity for publishers and the course will also examine the digital tools and content management systems used to produce international editions and brand extensions.
