Course Description: This course looks at general interest trade book publishing and the role acquisitions, subsidiary rights, promotion, distribution, and the publishing contract play in the process. Students examine how books are acquired in the different hardcover and paperback book genres and how a publication list is developed. The roles of editor and publisher are studied, as well as how sales and marketing contribute to a book’s success. Students are guided step by step through the publishing contract as well as basic production procedures (design, editorial, production, and manufacturing).
