From the Human Genome Project to ethical issues of stem cell research to the challenges of bioterrorism, biological sciences are in the forefront of today’s headlines. Our Bachelor of Science in Biology program prepares students for further education in scientific graduate school programs in professional schools, such as medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine or for employment in medical, biotechnological, and environmental fields. Available concentrations include General Biology, Environmental Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Pre-Physical Therapy. Throughout this program you’ll work closely with professors, and a junior-to- senior year capstone research course will place you in a “real world” laboratory setting to focus on a research project with your faculty mentor. Results of such projects often are presented at national scientific meetings.
Qualified B.S. in Biology students have an opportunity to enroll in a dual-degree Pace University Pace University program – Biology, B.S./Environmental Science, M.S. Moreover, B.S. in Biology students interested in pursuing a professional career in occupational therapy, optometry, or podiatry have an opportunity to participate in an accelerated joint dual-degree program with one of our three partner professional schools. Successful applicants to these dual-degree programs (separate professional school admission requirements apply) follow the appropriate B.S. Biology pre-professional track of courses and complete undergraduate coursework in three years instead of four and then complete professional coursework as follows:
--Master of Science in Occupational Therapy: Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons: 2 years
--Doctor of Optometry: SUNY State College of Optometry: 4 years
--Doctor of Podiatric Medicine: New York College of Podiatric Medicine: 4 years
Interested students in dual-degree programs must meet with a department advisor early in their first year of study.
