Open a door to the world and see it from the inside through its language and culture. As cultures converge and clash, there is a critical need for education and understanding among people of different ethnic, cultural, and linguistic origins. Individuals fluent in several languages and familiar with international cultures are in demand. Available on the New York City campus, the Modern Languages and Cultures curriculum includes both a major (24 credits) and a minor (12 credits) track. The major track offers an in-depth comprehensive program leading to linguistic and cultural fluency in one of the following languages: French, Italian, Russian or Spanish, and the minor track options are either a second language or an interdisciplinary areas study of one of the following tracks: Italian Studies; Francophone Studies; Hispanic Studies; and Slavic Studies. This program offers you a strong foundation that can lead to graduate school as well as teaching, publishing, translation, interpretation, and many other career opportunities. Requirements include a 3-credit Senior Capstone course in which you will synthesize your experience in a research paper, oral report, or translation project.
You will be encouraged to study abroad in a short or long-term program in order to experience the language and culture on a personal level. On campus you may participate in a wide variety of organizations such as CIAO (Italian Club), Japanese Business and Cultural Society, Spanish Club, and national honor societies including Phi Sigma Iota (Foreign Languages), Pi Delta Phi (French), and Gamma Kappa Alpha (Italian).
An opportunity is available to qualified majors to enroll in an accelerated dual-degree program - B.A. Modern Languages and Cultures: Spanish/M.S. Publishing. Interested students should meet with a departmental advisor early in their first year of study.
