Women’s and Gender Studies developed in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s to engage in research concerning all areas of women’s experience. Interdisciplinary and multicultural by definition, Women’s and Gender Studies emphasizes gender (femininities and masculinities) while including other categories of analysis such as race, class, and sexuality. By reexamining history, literature, and other disciplines, from a feminist and/or queer perspective, Women’s and Gender Studies seeks to understand sex roles and stereotypes of women and men in past and contemporary societies, women’s special concerns, and the representation of gender and sexuality in the arts and humanities.
