Master of Science in Counseling
The M.S. in Counseling program on the Westchester campus is a 36-credit hour program offering specializations in substance abuse counseling and loss and grief counseling. Students complete 21 credits of core Psychology courses and one track of 15 credits.
Our program’s substance abuse track prepares students to build successful careers in a field for which the need for well-trained counselors is firmly established. Completion of the curriculum allows graduates to apply for the CASAC (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor) certification in New York State.
Our program’s loss and grief track prepares students to work with the chronically and terminally ill and with their families and survivors. Specific course offerings in this track include Loss Across Life Span, Death and Dying, Grief Counseling, and Counseling AIDS and Other Chronic Illness. With grief counseling fast becoming a very important aspect of psychotherapy and counseling, there will be an increasing need in our society for grief counseling skills. The Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC), for example, is an international professional association which has grown significantly in the last few years.
At the end of their course of study, students take a three-credit integrating seminar. This capstone experience promotes students’ integration of theory and practice and examines professional ethics and practices in the counseling field. In addition, all students engage in supervised experience (for academic credit), beginning as early as the third semester of study.
The preferred prerequisites for the M.S. in counseling is a baccalaureate degree in psychology, human relations, human services, or related field.
