Each of the entries in this premiere issue engage an intersection with comics and culture, from Geo Sipp’s exciting work in progress, Wolves in the City, an examination of the Algerian Civil War; to the reviews of Jill LePore’s “The Secret History of Wonder Woman” and Noah Berlatsky’s "Wonder Woman: Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter Comics, 1941-1948." By publishing two reviews addressing the same topic, we hope to demonstrate the ways that scholarship must open up texts to multiple interpretations, to heterogeneous meanings that challenge the ways that we engage explanatory texts. While the articles here are more traditional in one sense—i.e. peer reviewed scholarly articles—we hope that their implications will speak both to those specializing in comics research and those seeking to learn more about the field.
