Active Shooter Response Training
The Departments of Emergency Management and Safety & Security seek to promote resiliency to disasters through emphasis on preparedness trainings for the Pace community. Participants will examine best practices and lessons learned from previous active shooter incidents in the country. Because most incidents are over within minutes, students, faculty, and staff must be prepared to deal with the situation until first responders arrive. Participants will learn recommended response tactics from the NYPD, as well as steps that can be taken immediately to protect oneself.

Google Voice is an internet-based service that allows you to give everyone one phone number and forward it to multiple phones. Google Voice also allows you to screen phone calls, block phone numbers, and apply rules based on the caller. When you receive voicemail messages, Google transcribes the message and can send you an email or text message to let you know about the call. Participants will learn how to acquire, set-up and configure a google voice number.

If you are looking for a way to reduce stress, consider tai chi (TIE-CHEE), an ancient Chinese tradition that was originally developed for self-defense. Today, tai chi has evolved into a graceful form of exercise that's now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai chi, often described as meditation in motion, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion.

Emergency preparedness training creates a “culture of preparedness” amongst the faculty, staff, and students by improving awareness and comprehension of what to do before, during, and after major emergency and disaster incidents. This training will go over emergency procedures for various hazards, including fire (as well as evacuation procedures), medical emergency, power outage, hazardous materials spill, natural disaster, suspicious person, and suspicious package.

Led by Dr. Sophie Kaufman, who has been practicing yoga and meditation for 20 years and trained as a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Teacher at the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society (CFM).

Opioid Overdose Prevention
Opioid Overdose Prevention
Drug overdose is a serious public health concern and opioid-related overdose has increased as a health threat. A life-saving law took effect on April 1, 2006, making it legal in New York State for non-medical persons to administer Naloxone (Narcan) to another individual to prevent an opioid/heroin overdose from becoming fatal. Pace University is a New York State registered Opioid Overdose Prevention Program and able to train non-medical individuals on overdose prevention. The Training will cover basic background, recognition of an overdose, overdose response, post-response and legal protections. All attendees will be provided a certificate of completion and an overdose response kit with doses of Naloxone (Narcan) nasal spray furnished by the NYSDOH.

This training course reviews ergonomics in the office environment. Ergonomics is an applied science concerned with the design of workplaces, tools, and tasks that match the physiological, anatomical, and psychological characteristics and capabilities of the worker. The goal of ergonomics is to ‘fit the job to the person,’ rather than making the person fit the job in addition to reducing musculoskeletal disorders with employees. This workshop explores and presents the goal of ergonomics with proper body alignment performing work tasks while sitting and standing in the office environment. The training will cover engineering adjustments involving the workstation, administrative solutions, and local resources.

Psychological First Aid
Psychological first aid is a counseling and emergency management concept and is a practice using non-intrusive and compassionate means to assist individuals in stressful situations. Psychological first aid is an integral approach to helping individuals affected by an emergency, disaster or traumatic event. This practice can be used by anyone and does not require the person that is applying these concepts to have a counseling background. As part of the workshop, staff will learn how to help reduce initial distress, meet individual’s current needs, and help individuals to feel safe.
