The article discusses the numerous economic and environmental advantages to renewable resources over fossil fuels. In addition, the article addresses two major hurdles in the way of developing renewable resources for electricity generation: cost and the administrative burdens of transmission expansion to bridge the distance between where renewables are located and where electricity is needed. Specifically, the article discusses distributed renewable generation produced on-site or nearby to where electricity is consumed. It also describes the benefits of and barriers facing distributed renewable generation and recommends steps that States, Congress, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission should take to reduce these barriers.
